The PRE-EMPT trial aimed to compare the clinical effectiveness of long acting progestogens with the combined oral contraceptive pill in preventing endometriosis related pain recurrence after surgery. The study included 405 women randomized to receive either a long acting progestogen or COCP. At three years, both groups showed around a 40% improvement in pain compared to preoperative levels, with no significant difference between groups. Women on long acting progestogens had fewer surgical procedures or second line treatments. The results indicate that both options are effective in treating endometriosis related pain, with a slight advantage for long acting reversible progestogens.
