After failing to build a sustainable business model, Akili Interactive, the maker of a video game designed to treat ADHD, has announced that it will go private in a merger with Virtual Therapeutics, a deal expected to benefit Akili’s shareholders with $34 million. Akili gained attention in 2020 for receiving FDA clearance for their ADHD treatment video game, but struggled to find success after going public in 2022. Many health tech companies, including Better Therapeutics and Cue Health, have faced challenges as investor interest in digital health declined following the Covid-19 pandemic. Akili’s decision to focus on a licensing deal while reevaluating their strategy reflects the broader struggles in the digital health sector.
