The U.S. CDC has issued an advisory about an increase in invasive meningococcal disease, urging healthcare providers to ensure necessary vaccinations. Caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, the disease affects the brain, spinal cord, and bloodstream. There have been 143 reported cases so far this year, up from 81 at the same time last year, with a total of 422 cases last year, mainly due to a particular strain in group Y. The CDC warns of atypical symptoms, particularly among those aged 30-60, African Americans, and HIV-positive individuals. Pfizer’s Penbraya vaccine protects against five of the six meningococcal bacteria groups, with other vaccines available for the remaining groups.
