A recent study by researchers at MIT, Harvard, and Massachusetts General Hospital has identified a specific gut bacteria species called Oscillibacter that can consume cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. The study involved over 1,400 participants in the Framingham Heart Study and found a strong correlation between Oscillibacter and lower cholesterol levels. Additionally, the researchers discovered that another bacterial species, Eubacterium coprostanoligenes, also plays a role in breaking down cholesterol in the gut. The researchers believe that studying combinations of bacterial species could provide new insights into how microbial communities interact and influence human health.
