The Department of Health in Ireland has launched a 2024 Waiting List Action Plan to address the growing number of people on waiting lists for inpatient or day-case procedures. The plan aims to remove over 1.8 million people from waiting lists this year, with a net reduction of around 39,000. There is a focus on outpatient appointments to help reduce overall waiting times, with a goal of cutting waiting list figures by six percent. The plan also aims to reduce the number of patients waiting more than three years for treatment by 90 percent and increase the proportion of patients meeting wait time targets to 90 percent. Increased activity in hospitals and additional funding have been allocated to support the implementation of the plan.
