Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital developed a risk prediction model for kidney injury after receiving the chemotherapy drug cisplatin by analyzing patient data from six major U.S. cancer centers. The model can predict which patients are at highest risk of kidney injury, with the highest-risk group having a 20-fold increased risk. Lower magnesium levels were also identified as a risk factor. The researchers created an online calculator to quantify the risk of kidney injury and plan to use the database to identify preventative therapies. This tool can help oncologists and patients make informed decisions about cisplatin treatment.
