Cases of norovirus are surging in parts of the United States this winter, with 91 outbreaks reported during the week of Dec. 5, up from 69 outbreaks the previous week. Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and fever. Outbreaks typically occur when infected individuals spread the virus through direct contact, contaminated surfaces, food, or water. Most people recover from norovirus in one to three days, but it can cause serious illness and hospitalizations, particularly among young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Handwashing and disinfecting surfaces are key to prevention.
