A study published in JAMA Pediatrics shows disparities in firearm and motor vehicle crash fatalities among youth in the United States. From 2011 to 2021, there were 35,684 firearm and 40,735 motor vehicle fatalities among children and youths aged 0 to 19. The study found differences in rates based on age, sex, race, and ethnicity, with increases in firearm homicides for Black and Hispanic males, as well as significant increases in firearm suicides among Black females. The researchers emphasize the importance of identifying populations at higher risk to develop targeted interventions. Further research is needed to address these disparities in youth fatalities.
