More than two thirds of American counties don’t have an endocrinologist, leaving 50 million people at risk for poor health outcomes. Areas with no endocrinologists have higher rates of diabetes, obesity, and stroke. GoodRx’s analysis showed that endocrinologists are clustered on the coasts and major cities, leaving rural areas underserved. The lack of endocrinologists leads to higher death rates in these “desert” counties. The Endocrine Society is working to address the shortage by increasing interest in endocrinology among medical students. The problem is expected to persist, with long-term solutions needed to address the issue.
