A study led by Rutgers Health suggests that giving more blood to anemic patients after a heart attack may save lives. The study, published in NEJM Evidence, analyzed data from four clinical trials involving 4,311 patients with heart attacks and low blood count. Results indicated that giving more blood transfusions was associated with a decreased risk of death at six months. The study was led by Jeffrey L. Carson and funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This research builds on previous studies conducted in 2023 and may impact transfusion guidelines for treating anemic patients with heart attacks.
