NHS England reports that one in eight phone calls made to hospitals under the Martha’s rule program have resulted in life-saving changes to treatment. Early data from pilot sites show patients have been transferred to intensive care, given antibiotics, or provided with oxygen due to the scheme. Martha’s rule allows patients and families to request an urgent review if they believe their concerns about a deteriorating condition are not being addressed. The program is named after Martha Mills, who passed away in 2021.
