Researchers at the Center for Autism Research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia conducted a study to examine Black caregivers’ concerns regarding police interactions with Black autistic children. The study found that Black autistic youth face a higher risk of negative outcomes during police encounters due to increased police contact and use of force towards the Black community. Caregivers expressed concerns about officers’ training, potential misinterpretation of autistic behaviors, the threat of harm, and hoped for more mindful policing. The study emphasizes the need for culturally responsive training for police to improve interactions with Black autistic youth.
