A study from Miguel Hernández University in Spain reveals that foods with protein claims may mislead consumers, as many are high in sodium, fat, and sweeteners. The research analyzed 4325 processed foods in the Spanish market and found that about 13% of them had protein claims, with plant-based meat analogs having the highest prevalence. Despite higher protein content, these foods also contained more unhealthy nutrients like saturated fat and sugar. Over 90% of foods with protein claims were classified as “less healthy,” emphasizing the importance of consumers being cautious and checking nutrition labels for hidden health risks when choosing protein-rich foods.
