The World Health Organization has published its first report on drowning prevention, showing a 38% decrease in global drowning deaths since 2000. However, more than 30 people are still estimated to drown every hour, with children under 5 and individuals under 29 being most at risk. Progress in reducing drowning deaths has been uneven, with 9 in 10 deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. WHO recommends various interventions to prevent drowning, but implementation varies across countries. Accurate data collection is crucial for prevention strategies, and the report highlights strengths and shortfalls in policy and legislation. Collaboration and investment are needed for a coordinated response to prevent drowning effectively.
