California’s Care program, which orders mental illness and drug treatment for residents, has expanded statewide but is falling short of objectives. The program allows for court-ordered treatments including housing and social services for those with severe mental illness or addiction. Despite initial goals to serve 2,000 people by 2024, only 787 Care petitions were filed and 150 placed in treatment. The program is facing criticism for its narrow scope and slow progress in reaching those who qualify. State officials are confident they can still meet treatment goals by the end of the year. Other states are also addressing the mental health crisis in different ways.
