New research suggests that people with type 2 diabetes should be screened for liver damage at the same time as they undergo screening for eye disease. Liver fibrosis, which can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer, is common in individuals with type 2 diabetes but often goes undetected. Screening for liver fibrosis alongside retina scanning could help in early detection and prevention of severe liver disease. A study conducted in Sweden found that many patients with type 2 diabetes were willing to undergo combined screening. However, the method may lead to false positives, and further health economic analyses are needed to assess its benefits.
