A recent study revealed that rates of postpartum depression in the U.S. have doubled over the past decade, reaching 19% in 2021. The prevalence of postpartum depression was higher among individuals with a higher pre-pregnancy body mass index. Untreated postpartum depression can negatively impact maternal and child health, leading to reduced bonding, lower breastfeeding rates, and developmental delays in children. Researchers emphasized the need for continued research and monitoring of the rising trends of postpartum depression, and tailored interventions to address the mental health needs of high-risk groups. Previous CDC analysis showed a decrease in postpartum depressive symptoms from 2004 to 2012, but did not include California data and relied on self-reports.
