Intense Blood Pressure Lowering Benefit Confirmed in Diabetes

The BPROAD trial in China showed that lowering systolic blood pressure to less than 120 mm Hg in patients with type 2 diabetes reduced the risk of cardiovascular events compared to standard treatment. The study confirmed that patients with diabetes responded similarly to those without diabetes in terms of benefit from aggressive blood pressure lowering. These results support more intensive blood pressure control in diabetics for preventing major cardiovascular events. However, close monitoring for hypotension and hyperkalemia is necessary with intensive treatment. The findings suggest that diabetes patients should have the same blood pressure targets as those without diabetes, but achieving lower targets can be challenging due to multiple medications and their side effects.
