The healthcare industry is transitioning to value-based care, which presents challenges for behavioral health providers in terms of contracting. CVS Health/Aetna’s chief psychiatric officer, Taft Parsons III, discussed these challenges at the Behavioral Health Tech conference. While primary care providers like Oak Street Health are taking on global risk contracts that include behavioral health outcomes, many behavioral health providers face difficulty in securing value-based contracts due to complexities in payment attribution. Parsons argued that behavioral health providers shouldn’t have to continuously prove their cost-effectiveness, especially given the high costs of untreated mental health disorders.
