Beacon Hospital in Ireland has introduced focal therapy, a new treatment for prostate cancer that aims to reduce side effects. The treatment involves using high intensity focused ultrasound energy to target cancerous cells while preserving surrounding tissue. Compared to traditional treatments like surgery and radiotherapy, focal therapy minimizes the risks of side effects such as erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and rectal toxicity. The procedure was successfully performed for the first time in Ireland by consultant urological surgeon Mr Mohammud Shakeel Inder. Beacon Hospital CEO Michael Cullen stated that the innovative therapy will have a significant impact on patients’ lives by providing better outcomes and reducing common side effects.
