Researchers from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Metamor Institute, Our Lady of the Lake, and LSU Health-New Orleans found that metabolic surgery in patients with heart failure led to a decrease in the need for oral diuretics to manage symptoms. The study, published in The American Journal of Cardiology, reviewed over 2,300 patient records, showing a 29% weight loss and 65% decrease in diuretic use at 24 months post-surgery. The reduction in diuretic use aligns with previous studies on improved quality of life after metabolic surgery, highlighting the potential benefits for patients with heart failure and obesity in South Louisiana.
