Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have discovered that a combination of green algae and yeast can boost the efficiency of wastewater treatment, leading to more sustainable and energy-efficient processes. This unique combination enhances the ability of microorganisms to absorb ammonium and phosphate ions in wastewater. The yeast produces carbon dioxide, which helps the green algae thrive in low carbon dioxide environments. This innovative approach could lead to the production of useful compounds such as polysaccharides, fats, and oils while also treating wastewater. The findings were published in the journal Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology.
