A study found that patients with primary thyroid cancer who received radioactive iodine therapy had an increased risk for melanoma and nonkeratinocyte skin cancers. Researchers used SEER data to examine the risk for subsequent skin cancers among patients with thyroid cancer, finding elevated risks for skin cancers, particularly in those treated with radioactive iodine. The study included data from over 174,000 patients, with 865 nonkeratinocyte skin cancers diagnosed after thyroid cancer treatment. The risk for skin cancer was higher for patients treated with radioactive iodine, especially for melanoma and other nonkeratinocyte skin cancers. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between thyroid cancer treatment and skin cancer.
