Novel visualization method helps make sense of large neuronal activity datasets

Researchers at HHMI Janelia Research Campus have developed a new computational method, Rastermap, to visualize recordings collected from many neurons at once. This method, outlined in a paper published in Nature Neuroscience, was applied to recordings from various sources, including the mouse and monkey cortex, rat hippocampus, zebrafish brain, and artificial neurons. Rastermap helps order individual neurons based on similarity, creating neat plots where groups of neurons with similar activity profiles are placed together. This method has been shown to present data in clearer and more visually appealing ways, providing new insights into neural activity and potentially supporting future discoveries in neuroscience.
