Despite a four percent increase in attendances, the number of patients waiting on trolleys in emergency departments over the October Bank Holiday weekend fell by 34 percent compared to the same period last year. The number of patients discharged from acute hospitals also increased by 28 percent compared to the same weekend in 2023. Discharges on Bank Holiday Monday were 42 percent higher this year than the previous year. The Department of Health reported a 12 percent decrease in cumulative daily 8am trolley count year-to-date. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation noted that over 100,000 people have been treated in hospitals without a bed so far this year.
