The Government has announced funding for the potential expansion of newborn screening to include more rare diseases, with nine conditions currently being screened for. Two new conditions will be introduced later this year, but Ireland still lags behind Europe in the number of conditions screened. Rare Diseases Ireland has called for urgent expansion of newborn screening services, stating that it could save the lives of 200 babies in Ireland each year. The funding will also support the development of rare disease services and improve access to clinical genetic services. Collaboration with international experts through the European Reference Networks will also be increased.
