The article discusses the disparities in healthcare experienced by Black Americans in rural areas of South Carolina, particularly along the “Corridor of Shame.” Despite efforts to address racial health inequities, policies and decisions at the federal, state, and local levels have perpetuated systemic racism and contributed to preventable deaths and worse health outcomes for Black individuals. The lack of Medicaid expansion, healthcare provider shortages, and historical racist policies have all played a role in creating and maintaining these disparities. Efforts to address these issues, such as expanding Medicaid, have been met with resistance, further entrenching racial health disparities.
