A new digital avatar therapy has shown promising results in treating auditory verbal hallucinations in people with psychosis, particularly schizophrenia. The therapy involves creating an avatar that resembles the voices in the person’s head and engaging in conversations to confront and gain power over the hallucinations. Results from a Phase 2/3 trial in the UK found that distress and severity of the voices lessened after 16 weeks of therapy. While the therapy is not for everyone and has a higher dropout rate, supporters emphasize its empowering effects and potential for clinical practice. The therapy may soon be tested in other countries and could offer a new approach to treating auditory hallucinations.
