A study presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting found that smokers with asthma were more likely to receive smoking cessation treatment compared to smokers without asthma. The study used an EHR system to identify smokers, with 18.1% of asthmatic smokers and 8.4% of non-asthmatic smokers receiving prescriptions for smoking cessation drugs. Nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, and bupropion were commonly prescribed. While varenicline was considered the most effective medication, it was prescribed the least often. The study highlighted the potential of EHRs in assessing the performance of tobacco cessation interventions.
