Lymph node-like structures may trigger the demise of cancer tumors

Researchers have identified a new stage of lymph node-like structures in liver tumors that may be crucial for treating hepatocellular carcinoma. These structures, called tertiary lymphoid structures, contain immune B and T cells and are associated with a better response to immune checkpoint inhibitors, which reactivate the body’s anti-cancer immunity. Patients with more of these structures have a lower risk of cancer recurrence after surgery. The study suggests that these structures may play a key role in generating anti-tumor immunity. Further research will focus on inducing the formation of these structures in patients who do not develop them naturally and exploring their impact on different cancer types.
