Repeated fasting for multiple orthopedic surgeries linked to poor recovery outcomes

A study presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2024 annual meeting found that patients who have multiple orthopedic surgeries during the same hospital stay are at risk of malnutrition due to repeated fasting, which can slow recovery and increase the risk of death. Patients are often required to fast for at least eight hours before surgery to reduce the risk of regurgitation and aspiration during anesthesia. Malnourished patients had higher hospital costs, longer stays, and increased mortality rates. Researchers suggest that personalized nutritional support should be provided to patients undergoing multiple surgeries to prevent malnutrition and facilitate faster recovery.
