A University of Michigan-led study found that 4.22 million U.S. adults had glaucoma in 2022, with 1.49 million experiencing vision impairment. The study, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, revealed demographic and geographic disparities in glaucoma cases, with Black adults showing the highest prevalence at 3.15%. The prevalence of glaucoma increased with age, ranging from 1.11% in Utah to 1.95% in Mississippi. Data sources included surveys, claims, and eye disease studies, with Bayesian meta-regression methods used for estimation. These findings could help guide public health strategies and resource allocation, particularly for high-risk groups and regions.
