Researchers have found that COVID-19 vaccination is associated with a higher risk of facial palsy, particularly within the first 28 days of receiving the vaccine. Facial palsy, also known as Bell’s palsy, causes temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles. Although the exact cause is unknown, experts believe that viral infections, autoimmune mechanisms, or vaccination could be triggers. A large study in South Korea involving over 44 million patients showed a 12% increased risk of facial palsy within 1 to 28 days post-vaccination, regardless of whether individuals received mRNA or viral vaccines. The researchers suggest that clinicians carefully assess the risk of facial palsy associated with COVID-19 vaccines and monitor for neurological signs after vaccination.
