A study published in JAMA found that the use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine systems for contraception increased the risk of breast cancer among women in Denmark aged 15 to 49. The study included 78,595 women who initiated the use of the device between 2000 and 2019. Results showed that users had a higher risk of breast cancer compared to nonusers, with the risk increasing with years of use. The researchers emphasized the importance of discussing the potential risks of breast cancer with women considering the use of this contraceptive method.
