A recent study found a concerning link between COVID-19 infection and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in children. Researchers analyzed electronic health records of over 600,000 patients aged 10 to 19, finding a higher risk of new-onset diabetes following COVID-19 compared to other respiratory infections. The risk was also higher in overweight or obese patients and those hospitalized due to COVID-19. The study suggests that the metabolic stress caused by COVID-19 may contribute to this increased risk and highlights the need to consider preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in children to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes.
