Sociologist Elena Portacolone of UC San Francisco leads the Living Alone With Cognitive Impairment Project, finding at least 4.3 million older Americans with cognitive issues living alone. These individuals face challenges in daily activities but often do not receive assistance. Many are older women of color without access to publicly funded programs. Those with dementia are at high risk of neglect, malnutrition, and scams. Individuals with cognitive impairment emphasize independence and struggle with self-care and financial management. Support groups and community organizations offer some assistance, but there is still a critical need for improved outreach and resources for this vulnerable population.
