Younger cancer patients can now preserve their fertility before undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, thanks to the efforts of Talha Al-Shawaf. In collaboration with CancerBACUP in 2008, Al-Shawaf advocated for a short “window” for fertility preservation before aggressive cancer treatment began. Despite the availability of fertility specialists, oncologists were reluctant to inform patients of this option. Research at Barts Hospital showed the success of pre-treatment fertility preservation. Patients often chose to delay cancer treatment in order to preserve their fertility. Al-Shawaf’s efforts have allowed younger cancer patients the opportunity to preserve their chances of having children in the future.
