As huge tracts of South America are engulfed in smoke from intentionally set fires, residents of Porto Velho in the Brazilian Amazon are experiencing minimal sunlight due to the toxic plumes. The fires, still burning and devastating forests in countries like Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay, are a result of the annual “burning season” for development, worsened by the worst drought in 40 years associated with El Niño and climate change. More than 50,000 wildfires ravaged Brazil last month, with approximately 30 million acres destroyed in the country between January and August. The situation highlights the urgent need for action to address the impact of these fires on the environment.
