A study outlines the detection of SARS-CoV-2-reactive CD4+ T cells in different patient groups. Preschool-age children have been observed to rarely develop severe cases of COVID-19 despite exposure to the virus. Research suggests that the unique immune response of preschoolers, characterized by distinct T and B cell responses, plays a key role in their ability to avoid severe infections. Preschoolers show lower antiviral CD4+ T cell responses and have marked inflammatory features in their memory T cells compared to older individuals. This finding could help explain why preschoolers are less likely to develop severe COVID-19 compared to older age groups.
