A new study based on data from a travel app developed by researchers at the University of Zurich found that one in three travelers falls ill during their trips, with gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms being the most common. The app, developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization, allows travelers to report daily symptoms, which can help track outbreaks of contagious diseases early. Gastrointestinal symptoms were most prevalent in travelers to Asia, while respiratory illnesses were common in European travelers. The research team hopes to gather more data to use artificial intelligence to detect outbreaks faster and make travel safer and healthier.
