New data highlights most common causes of death in Ireland

Road deaths in Ireland increased by over 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Cancer was the leading cause of death, with malignant neoplasms resulting in the deaths of over 10,000 individuals. Diseases of the circulatory system were the second most common cause of death. There were 188 road deaths, with Tipperary recording the highest number. Suicide also resulted in 302 deaths, with a majority being male. Health statistics showed an increase in medical card and GP visit card holders, as well as a growth in health insurance coverage. Immunisation rates remained stable for most illnesses, except for a few that fell below 90%.
