A study found that less than half of US veterans on chronic immunosuppressive medications, especially those under 50 years old, received the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) by mid-2023. The study assessed 190,162 veterans prescribed immunosuppressive medications in the Veterans Health Administration healthcare system. Among those over 50, 49.8% received RZV by mid-2023, while only 13.4% of those under 50 were vaccinated. Factors associated with lower vaccination rates included male sex, African American or unknown race, and nonurban residence. The study suggests that efforts should be made to improve vaccination rates, including creating tools to identify high-risk individuals and standardizing vaccination guidelines.
