Jee Hyo Kim, a community health worker at Asian Health Services in Oakland, California, provided support to violent crime survivors by linking them to resources and services. Through a lay counseling training program, Kim gained skills to offer emotional support to clients and improve communication. The program, part of a movement to address therapist shortages by training non-licensed professionals, has been effective in providing mental health support to low-income Asian immigrants with limited English proficiency. The Community Healing Unit at Asian Health Services offers lay counseling and therapy by licensed providers in several languages, aiming to bridge the gap in mental health care access for Asian Americans.
