A new study found that individuals with treatment-resistant major depression (TRD) have a 17% higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those with non-TRD major depressive disorder (MDD). The increased mortality risk was largely due to suicide and accidental overdose, which were nearly twice as high in those with TRD who did not improve after two treatments. Data from 176,942 individuals in Finland showed that mortality rates were significantly higher for external causes in the TRD group. The study highlights the need for more effective treatments for TRD to reduce the risk of mortality.
