Whooping cough cases in the US have surged this year, with four times as many cases reported compared to all of 2023. The CDC reported 14,569 cases as of September 14, 2024, with 291 new cases that week. New York had the most cases, followed by Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a respiratory illness spread through close contact. The DTaP vaccine protects against whooping cough, diphtheria, and tetanus, but boosters are recommended every decade. Vaccine hesitancy and lack of social distancing are contributing to the outbreak. FDA advisers are discussing more effective boosters for whooping cough.
