European researchers have developed a new method for analyzing wastewater data to detect multiple health threats simultaneously. Wastewater monitoring can help identify disease-causing bacteria, viruses, and antimicrobial resistance sources. The study analyzed samples from seven wastewater treatment plants in major European cities. The research identifies human, animal, industry, and environmental sources of threats like antimicrobial resistance and cholera, aiding in disease outbreak prevention. The data was analyzed with new software, resulting in the discovery of unknown bacterial species and improved accuracy in identifying bacterial origins. The study also found traces of cholera bacteria near a wastewater treatment plant in Copenhagen.
