Topical timolol is proving to be an effective alternative to surgery in treating pyogenic granulomas in children, especially when the growth is small and on the face. Dr. Julie Dhossche from Oregon Health & Science University presented evidence at a dermatology meeting showing that timolol can help stop bleeding and reduce the need for surgical procedures. In a retrospective study, 52.5% of patients treated with timolol alone were spared from surgery. Proper comfort positioning and distraction techniques, as well as gentle language when describing procedures to children, can help make the experience less stressful. Topical timolol is applied under occlusion and may take several months to clear the granuloma.
