Should the US Follow Suit?

Experts are concerned about new UK guidelines restricting valproate use in women and men under 55 due to safety risks, prompting the question of whether the US should update its guidelines. The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued guidance requiring two specialists to approve valproate use in new and existing female patients under 55. While the American Epilepsy Society (AES) is not recommending changes to US guidelines, some experts believe valproate should only be used as a last resort due to known risks of major congenital malformations and neurodevelopmental disorders. The MHRA also includes men in its guidelines due to potential fertility and neurodevelopmental risks.
