Black women in the U.S. have a three times higher risk of dying from pregnancy-related conditions compared to White women. While lack of access to healthcare is often cited as the main reason for this disparity, healthcare expert Bayo Curry-Winchell argues that access alone does not paint the full picture. Factors such as racial discrimination, clinician bias, and unconscious bias also play a significant role in maternal health outcomes for Black women. Curry-Winchell, who almost died from complications after giving birth, emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to listen to patients, address biases, and ensure equitable treatment for all individuals regardless of their race or background.
