Sleep Patterns Predict Response to Fibromyalgia Treatment

A new study suggests that patients with fibromyalgia who are not “morning people” may respond differently to serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) treatment. Patients with less pain relief on SNRIs reported rougher mornings and worse sleep. Chronic pain, sleep disturbances, and circadian rhythm disruptions can exacerbate each other in fibromyalgia patients. SNRIs can help with pain, anxiety, and depression but may not directly improve sleep. Individuals may experience a variety of side effects from SNRIs, potentially affecting sleep. Recommendations to improve sleep in fibromyalgia patients include good sleep hygiene, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exercise, light therapy, and other interventions. Referral for a sleep study may also be beneficial.
